Good luck with getting an offer to take the oral assessment. If you do get to take the orals, I recommend attending a prep session (you can find one near you at careers.state.gov. I attended one and was so appreciative of the assistance it gave me that I volunteered for the next two. There are often officers in the session who recently passed and can give you pointers.
I also recommend looking at yahoo groups. There are groups for those who have passed the written as well as for those who passed to orals. That group will give you lots of information on when offers are going out, the security clearance process, etc. Several officers, me included, lurk on there and give advice from time to time.
Also, I keep a fairly substantial blogroll of FS blogs on my blog (http://lifeafterjerusalem.blogspot.com). You can take a look there and see what life in the FS is like.
Good luck!
