Getting ink done – Part I

Posted by quirksalight on August 29, 2007

Yup.
It’s going to run across my upper back, in three panels. The main central panel is a thirteen-pointed star:
star.jpg
The star was designed on Geometer’s sketchpad and the trefoil mobius strip courtesy of K. Brakke’s code using Surface Evolver (freeware). The gray shading on the points aren’t completely true to what it will be; the reality will be more gradual and blended with the other facets.
The remaining two panels are still abstract and in progress. No worries.. they flank the star, so it’s a bit essential that it’s finished first, no?
Found a shop & artist whom I’m happy with; Chris Koutsis from Da Vinci tattoo.
August 31st is the date.

The Edge is a go…

Posted by quirksalight on August 21, 2007

Like I mentioned here: https://quirksalight.wordpress.com/2007/08/21/darwin-at-work-or-just-adrenaline/

Yup. Got a team, now the training begins. Two fellow grad students and I are going for The Edge race in southeastern PA. 🙂
I really need to work on the running…

Darwin at work, or just adrenaline?

Posted by quirksalight on August 21, 2007

A friend of mine directed me to the pages of the US Adventure Racing Association, stating, “I think you’ll really like what they are doing.”
Holy Moly… it looks like fun and rather challenging, to say the least, some of the events being jaw-dropping at the description.
But it gave me a new goal to push to : The October 21st The Edge Challenge in Southeastern PA. I’ll have to scrounge up team of like-minded gals and guys, but I’ll figure something out… Anyone interested? 😀
Now, to work on the running….

Another year, maybe wiser…

Posted by quirksalight on August 14, 2007

Thanks for all the b-day wishes everyone! 😀
Another year older, and maybe wiser. I’ll definitely remember this one – it’s been a rather memorable year, and I’ve got another 4 months left in 2007! 😛 Lots of changes, some good, some bad – all of which were learning experiences.
To quote Lucille Ball: “I’d rather regret what I have done then regret not having done it at all.”

A quiet start to the next year, but that’s until tomorrow. The celebration is to be on the 14th for the triskaidekaphobics and vinophiles…

Perseids meteor shower

Posted by quirksalight on August 13, 2007

This weekend was the peak of the Perseids meteor shower. A couple friends and I went out to the eastern end of Long Island to check them out on the beach. We did get to catch the beginning of it, but as the meteors are best viewed from 11pm to dawn, we didn’t get to see the shower in its glory. 😦
I was hoping to get some photos, but not enough action for any pics. Though on the upside, we found a great place to look at the stars and it was a nice way to start my birthday this year.

Apparently I’m safer out of school….

The latest issue of Wired magazine had an amusing article: The Best Dangerous Science Jobs
My current profession: #6 – Graduate Student
Kaboom!?!? [Source: Wired magazine]

Is it a bad thing if I look at the list and think, “hmm….possible checklist?”

#1 (Astronaut) – I wanna go to space!!
#2 (BSL-4 researcher) – Ebola, anyone?
#3 (hurricane hunter) – “We’re off to see the Wizard! The wonderful Wizard of Oz!”
#4 (Doctors without Borders Lab tech) – Danger, with a side of microbes…
#5 (Propulsion Engineer) – nah…
#6 – (Grad student) – Doing it now
#7 – (Volcanologist) – cool, but not really interesting
#8 – (Biologist) – done it

I’m actually following a TV show…

Posted by quirksalight on August 6, 2007

I caught this neat show on the the History Channel the other day, called Human Weapon. Every episode is about a different martial art, with the hosts traveling to locations around the world where they originated from to give a historical summary behind the evolution of the martial art. It’s interesting b/c it breaks down key individual moves and training elements in each martial art form as the two host get a crash course the art form before going head to head in a master in that martial art form.
And it’s not dry – the hosts are actually pretty self-deprecating and rather amusing. I do wonder if it’s all scripted or if there are ad-libbed comments… probably more the former… you can tell where it sounds like the host is reading off of a page.

Counting boxes…

Posted by quirksalight on August 6, 2007

Continuing in my quest to minimize my life, I’m counting the amount of yarn I own and it’s a lot. Right now, I have enough yarn to fill four 16 gallon tubs. And that’s just the yarn; not including the books, patterns, needles, etc.
So now what? I guess I could sell it, but I did buy the yarn b/c I like it.

A very funny issue?

Posted by quirksalight on August 3, 2007

Or Stats can be very amusing…
bentropy posted a comment about Gene Expression‘s article on Intercourse and Intelligence that was an interesting lead. And yes, there were some inversely proportionality going on…
Don’t worry… there are always outliers… 😛
Yes, apparently you can get research funding to study just about everything.
