meh!

Posted by quirksalight on October 25, 2007

One of my gal pals (TS) in NY surprised me with a lovely “leaving school/moving away” gift yesterday:
the Meh. Flask from Thinkgeek.com

It’s the Meh.flask from thinkgeek!!!

I’ve been eying it for quite some time now, and i’m very excited that it is now in my possession. 🙂 Just in time for Halloween, too! I will be building my costume around this, ahem, prop.

Deliberate psychosis (?)

Posted by quirksalight on October 23, 2007

It appears that sleep deprivation causes emotionally erratic behavior due to the shut down of the prefrontal cortex. Hmm… it’s good to know the mechanistic reason for such, but will this prevent people from not sleeping? Nah….

Back in Black

Posted by quirksalight on October 20, 2007

It’s time for another change in hair color. I bleached about 50% of the strands and dyed my entire head blue a couple months ago, which then faded to a lovely green, and then to the blond of the bleached strands. Now that i’ve got a bit of time, I decided to get rid of the blonde (contrary to popular belief, blondes do not have more fun). It’s now blue-black.

Dawn of a new day…

Posted by quirksalight on October 20, 2007

And it’s a wrap! Well, mostly. Yesterday (Friday, 10/19) was my last day in the lab, and today is officially the first day of my leave of absence. And now… well… it’s interesting…the amount of free time I have is making me more a bit giddy.
It was rather sweet; two of my friends organized a surprise going away party for me; cake and ice cream with friends. Fantastic! =) On top of this, a night out in Manhattan to a great Moroccan restaurant called Tagine Dining Gallery led to a grand ol’ time.

Sometimes, I wonder about my decision, but with the medical problems I’ve been having, my general unhappiness with being a graduate student, and lack of focus, this is the best choice for me. The leave will let me decide if I miss research or not, and give me a chance to focus on my rehabilitation of my knee.

Even the tooth fairy is out to get me

Posted by quirksalight on October 18, 2007

To continue on how this blog is morphing into a medical litany, a part of my tooth broke off yesterday. Had not a clue – thought to myself while brushing, “Whoa, that’s a big chunk of food that got stuck!” Nope. A part of the rearmost upper right molar had broken off, taking a part of the metal filling with it. Didn’t even realize it until later in the day when my tongue feels a hole in that tooth. Great….. someone please tell me how the filling breaks when it’s surrounded by the tooth?

At least it’s not too major – didn’t hit the nerve, just need to fix the filling.

Stitches of one sort or another

Posted by quirksalight on October 10, 2007

Knitting is at an all-time low right now. I don’t think I’ve picked up the needles in over a week, and it’s annoying the crap out of me. I’m three-quarters of the way to finishing my first ever sweater and like most things, the last leg of the project is a drag. It doesn’t really help that for the past week, a good deal of my attention has been devoted to pain management, which is a total bitch. The damn knee and the cyst is swollen and compressing other things (probably nerves) in my leg causing large amounts of pain. I can almost swear that there is a friggin’ gremlin in my knee. I’m getting my second opinion for treatment options (surgery or not, and if so, what kind) tomorrow morning, and it can’t come soon enough.

Drag Queens and Food

Posted by quirksalight on October 10, 2007

This past weekend, the ladies of the “wool crew” (as the stitch n’ bitchers have been referred to) took me to Lucky Chang’s in Manhattan as a celebration of my eminent leap into the great unknown.
Now, Lucky Cheng’s is a place with a dinner and a show. Dinner being a “pan-asian” cuisine with the drinks having rather raunchy names, and the description of the serving sizes too! On top of that, the show is a drag cabaret performance by Maxxy and the Asian dollys. (yes, the stereotypes run riot there)
I had an absolute blast! Yes, there was audience participation. 😛

Manu Chao, baby!

Posted by quirksalight on October 10, 2007

Manu Chao's La Radiolina Cover
Manu Chao has his first CD out in 6 years, called La Radiolina. The first time I heard his music was live at the Montreal Jazz Festival and it was fantastic. Outdoors, on an island in the middle of the St. Lawrence river, with thousands of people, it was a unique experience. So it’s not too surprising that I’m a little let down by the CD, as it’s a little anti-climatic after such an experience. But at the same time, the music is a trigger for one of the best concert experiences I’ve had; the hook from “Panik Panik” and “Rainin in Paradize” trigger memories of dancing on the hillside at dusk.
The songs are catchy, the hooks stick with you after you’re done listening, and makes you want to get up and dance. It’s surprising that he’s not more popular here, but now, I’ll be going back to check out his older cds and those produced when he was with Radio Bemba Sound System and Mano Negra. In fact, I just ordered Clandestino (Manu Chao) and Puta’s Fever (Mano Negra). 🙂

The last month…

Posted by quirksalight on October 6, 2007

It’s strange… there’s exactly 4 weeks left before I move out of NY for good and it’s really sinking in. I turned in the form to declare that I will be taking a leave of absence from school. It’s only good for a year; I’ll have to fill it out again this time every year if I want to be eligible to come back sometime in the future.
Not too much in the way of packing. I’ve been living out of bags and boxes for the past two months. Still have to sell some yarn… that’s still on the “to do” list before I move out.

Postponement

Posted by quirksalight on October 6, 2007

Knee surgery is postponed. Several reasons, the main one being that the Dr and I were not in agreement. I thought it was going to be an arthroscopic lavage, but he was recommending a debridement and possible chrondroplasty. Basically, he thought the cartilage should be reshaped and smoothed down, which involves the removal of tissue. I wasn’t too keen on this this idea and was wondering if it was really necessary. Hence, I’m getting a second opinion on the state of the knee, the surgery, and the cyst. The last of which hasn’t been an issue for the past week, but that was probably due to being sick most of last week.
