The Little things in life.

Posted by quirksalight on August 2, 2010

I’ve been at Embassy Seoul for little over a month now, and it’s been a rollercoaster. From running around, planning visits, to meeting contacts, managing (actually, more being managed BY) the LES, and mentoring interns, it’s been a trip. For the most part very good, some low points of frustration and wanting to hit my head against a wall as I scrabble up the “learning curve”. Though, at times, it definitely feels like a cliff. But I’m getting it. And the little things makes me smile.

Getting up at 3am, running around on adrenaline and realizing at the end of the day, EVERYTHING was OK.
Laughing with a new contact as an introductory interview becomes more of a conversation between new-found friends.
Realizing that I CAN conduct at least a part of a meeting in Korean – well, it was about food, eating, Iftar and Ramadan – but STILL… no translator needed for that, and it was official, with some technical words and stuff! 🙂
Amazon delivers in a week – no extra shipping charges. I ❤ APO.
Yongsan has an amazing library; with better hours than back home!!!

And realizing that my creative skills weren't rusty – I make damn good mango-banana bread, and assembled my own pillow-top bed.

Whee! I’m getting ready to depart, and one of the things that I had planned to pick up was a new digital camera.
I had a list of requirements, including wide-angle, 8MP or higher, decent optical zoom, 3″ LCD screen, ease of use, high review rating from cnet, etc.
SO I decided and got the Canon Powershot SD 870 IS.
Canon Powershot SD870 IS See the review here.

The toss up was between the Powershot and the Olympus Stylus 790. The former has better picture quality, but the latter is impact-resistant, waterproof, and good for sub-zero temps. Since I will be using the camera several times a week to chronicle my time in Korea, I went for image quality over the high durability. The pictures are rather amazing.

Lights, lights, lights.. (Gear Review)

Posted by quirksalight on November 11, 2007

The headlamp mentioned in last week’s semi-disaster night ride was the Petzl Tikka LED headlamp, bought at REI. the image below is from the REI website.
Petzl Tikka headlamp

It’s lightweight and very unobtrusive. This light was rated at 46 lux at 2 meters, flood style beam, and was 3 LED’s powered by 3 AAA batteries. It’s a nice headlamp, especially for the price (under $30), but not at all suitable for biking. VERY, VERY bad for biking. The light emitted from this lamp is just not strong enough for riding the trail at night. From the front of the bike helmet (the lamp did fit quite nicely and securely around my bike helmet, though), I couldn’t really see past 2 meters. Which is a very big problem, when you are trying to ride around and over obstacles, constantly changing direction and speed, and having to watch the trail so you won’t slip and fall, possible over the side and down a hill. Thank goodness I was with a group – even so, I had to bail halfway through.
I can see that this would be ok if you were on foot, or camping, and need a light that will leave your hands free. But if you want to get moving at any speed… well… I’d pick something else.

Definitely learned my lesson. NEVER skimp on the lights when night riding.

FYI – REI’s return policy is awesome.

One of my gal pals (TS) in NY surprised me with a lovely “leaving school/moving away” gift yesterday:
the Meh. Flask from Thinkgeek.com

It’s the Meh.flask from thinkgeek!!!

I’ve been eying it for quite some time now, and i’m very excited that it is now in my possession. 🙂 Just in time for Halloween, too! I will be building my costume around this, ahem, prop.

Getting Ink Done – Part II

Posted by quirksalight on September 1, 2007

Here’s the design, inked into my back as of yesterday night:
Star and Mobius

Chris did a great job with the shading and the line detail; totally happy with it and will be going back to him for other tattoo work. If you’re looking for an artist on Long Island, I’d totally recommend him and the shop, Da Vinci tattoo. The shop had a great atmosphere and the staff were very open and welcoming to customers. They weren’t patronizing or condescending when I went to talk to them about my design (multiple times and several incarnations of) or my concerns about getting a tattoo and how to take care of it. Yes, I did run into those attitudes when looking for a shop/artist to do the work.

The process itself was shorter than I expected. The actual time to ink the design into my back was about an hour, give or take. And I have to admit, it was a little more painful than I expected it to be; but hey, it does make sense; you’re causing tiny wounds to allow ink to be trapped under your skin in a particular design.
